About CheckMyMTD

Our mission
CheckMyMTD exists to make Making Tax Digital simple and accessible for every UK taxpayer. We built the most comprehensive free MTD compliance engine available — covering every taxpayer type, every edge case, every exemption ground — because we believe nobody should face HMRC penalties simply because they didn't understand the rules.
Who writes this content
All guides and calculator logic on CheckMyMTD are written and reviewed by UK tax researchers with a focus on HMRC Making Tax Digital policy. Our content team monitors HMRC announcements, technical guidance updates, and legislation changes at legislation.gov.uk and GOV.UK continuously.
Qualifications and expertise: Content draws on direct reading of HMRC published guidance, the Income Tax (Digital Requirements) Regulations 2021 (SI 2021/1076), the Finance Act 2021, and subsequent HMRC technical consultation documents. Every factual claim on this site links to its primary HMRC or legislation source.
Review process: All calculators and threshold information are tested against HMRC's published eligibility criteria before publication and reviewed within 48 hours of any HMRC announcement affecting MTD ITSA scope, dates, or thresholds.
Independent: CheckMyMTD is not affiliated with HMRC, any accountancy firm, or any MTD software vendor. Software affiliate links are disclosed on every page where they appear.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) is one of the most significant changes to UK tax administration in decades. From April 2026, hundreds of thousands of sole traders and landlords will be legally required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. The rules are complex, the edge cases are numerous, and the penalties for non-compliance are real.
We built CheckMyMTD to answer the questions that even experienced accountants find time-consuming to work through for every client: exactly when does your obligation start? Does your specific income type count? Are you eligible for an exemption? What software should you use for your specific situation? What exactly does non-compliance cost you?
What makes us different
Most MTD information online is either too basic (one-paragraph summaries) or locked behind paywall accountancy portals. CheckMyMTD gives you a full analysis — qualifying income calculation, threshold transition prediction, exemption assessment, penalty modelling, software matching, personalised roadmap, and calendar export — completely free, no account required.
Our data sources
All information is based on published HMRC guidance at GOV.UK, HMRC technical notes, legislation at legislation.gov.uk, and HMRC consultations and announcements. We update this site whenever HMRC publishes new guidance — typically within 48 hours of any announcement.
Affiliate transparency
Software recommendations in our engine include affiliate links to Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Zoho Books and Sage. If you click and purchase through these links, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. Our recommendations are based entirely on user profile matching — not commission rates. We would never recommend software that is not right for your situation.
Free forever
CheckMyMTD is and will remain free to use. No account. No paywall. No upsell. We are supported by the affiliate commissions described above and that is our only revenue source.
Follow CheckMyMTD
We post HMRC announcements, MTD deadline reminders, and threshold updates across our social channels as soon as they happen — often before mainstream coverage catches up.
Editorial Policy
Last updated: June 2026
Our editorial standards
CheckMyMTD publishes guidance on Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) for UK sole traders, landlords, and self-employed individuals. Every piece of content we publish must meet the following standards before going live and must be maintained to these standards after publication.
Accuracy and sourcing
Every factual claim on CheckMyMTD — every threshold figure, deadline date, penalty amount, and exemption category — must be traceable to a primary source: HMRC published guidance at GOV.UK, UK primary legislation (Finance Acts, Income Tax Act 2007), or HMRC secondary legislation (statutory instruments). We do not publish claims that cannot be verified against a primary source.
Where HMRC guidance is ambiguous or subject to ongoing consultation, we say so explicitly. We do not present uncertain interpretations as settled facts.
Update policy
We monitor HMRC's GOV.UK pages, HMRC press releases, and the UK Parliament's legislation.gov.uk daily. When HMRC publishes new guidance, amends existing guidance, or announces a change to MTD ITSA scope or deadlines, we review and update all affected pages within 48 hours. The "Last updated" date on each guide page reflects the most recent material change to that page's content.
Distinction between guidance and advice
CheckMyMTD publishes general information about MTD obligations. Our calculator outputs and guide content describe how HMRC's published rules apply to defined scenarios — they are not tailored tax advice for any individual. We state clearly on every page that users should consult a qualified tax adviser for advice specific to their circumstances. This is not a disclaimer of responsibility alone; it reflects a genuine commitment to staying within our competence.
Affiliate content
Software comparison pages include affiliate links. We disclose this on every page where affiliate links appear. Affiliate relationships have zero influence on our rankings or recommendations — we apply the same evaluation criteria to every software provider regardless of whether we have an affiliate relationship with them. We test and verify HMRC approval status independently before recommending any software.
Independence
CheckMyMTD receives no payments from HMRC, accountancy firms, or government bodies. We are not part of any accountancy or tax software group. Our content is written entirely independently, and our ratings and recommendations cannot be purchased.
Corrections
If you believe any content on this site is factually incorrect or out of date, please contact us at [email protected]. We take corrections seriously and will review and respond within 3 working days. If a correction is substantiated, we will update the relevant page and note the correction.
